Center Support Bearing -1999 V70 XC AWD

Post by bcfischer »

The driveshaft center support/carrier bearing and cross-member rusted out and I need to replace it. The driveshaft is otherwise OK.

I measured the diameter of the shaft that I have to press the new bearing on at about 35mm. The replacement bearings I find online, listed as fitting my vehicle down to its VIN, all have inside diameters of about 25mm.

Any idea on a part number or vendor for a support bearing that will fit my driveshaft? Any expert tips on separating the driveshaft from the U-Joint?

Thanks, take care, and stay safe,

Brian

Do I need to pull these center bearing supports as that is the 2nd or 3rd that has been highlighted as rusted out.

There are 2 V70 XC's in PnP local to me, a 99 and a 00, as well as a 99? S70 AWD. I am fairly sure they all use the same support. Not sure if you can replace the center bearing yourself.

The go to is Colorado Driveshaft in Denver. CO.

There is a chassis break for the center bearing support - I learned the old fashioned way by pulling one from my'00 XC - but when I needed one for the '98R there wasn't one to be found used, not even through Robert. He did find one in a salvage yard, several weeks after I needed mine. The one on my '00 was spotless, the one on the '98 fell in half when I pulled the bolts.
Had to buy one new,

Unclear from the dealer listing where the break occurs.

Neil, the raw stamping may be the same - the one off the '00XC did bolt up to the '98 - but the placement of the center bearing was off, and not by a little. The chassis break for the floor extension may be where the driveshaft break occurs.
If the ones you are seeing in the yards look good, it certainly wouldn't hurt to harvest a few; Robert looked for me on over a dozen trips to salvage yards on the west coast without luck. He found one eventually back in Cinncy, while he was waiting for Dianne to join him.

Yes, 4 years of AWD production and 3 different drive shafts! I will do a Vida check on part numbers and compatibility so I know! I plan a trip there tomorrow to return a couple of parts and as it is the last day of 50% off all parts may take the opportunity to grab those just in case for others. I think there is a 99 and 00 V70XC and in the other yard a 99 S70 AWD.

Glad you found one though!

I should have mentioned I had to get my R back on its hands and feet, so had already bought a new one from the dealer - and was stunned when it only took a few days to arrive in Annapolis. Picked it up on the way back from VA in DC, so it was sort of a 200 mile round trip.

Putting a new center bearing on that driveshaft is an Heroic adventure. I would be tempted to just prop the old shaft it against the wall in the garage and motor on, fwd style. That's what I did with the green '00 70XC.
