Correct transmission fluid for 2000 AW55-50 5-speed auto?

Post by FireFox31 »

What type of transmission fluid must be used in the AW55-50 LE 5-speed automatic transmission in a 2000 S70 / V70 / C70? Is it Dexron III, JWS 3309, or some other type of ATF?

My 2000 V70 owner's manual says: "AW4: ATF Dexron III and Mercon. AW5: Only Volvo gearbox oil (1161540-8). Do not mix with other oils."
This suggests that different fluids are used for the 4-speed (up through 1999) and the 5-speed (2000 and later). The 5-speed fluid type isn't clearly specified.

I have two transmissions to flush so I must be sure I'm using the right fluid. Thanks.

Transmission fluid has progressed since 2000. Any synthetic multi-grade JSW3309 is okay. As for the flush if you experience any problems it's because it had a problem in the first place and not with the flush. This is true also for the transmission fluid. The 2 times I had a problem was running the older Valvoline Maxlife and trying out the Swepco 30W rather than using the standard 20W I had been using for years. Way too thick for the 2000 Nissan Frontier.

I forgot if I had use this as the flush or ran with. Cheap enough to give it a try and compatible. The Havoline is always good.

Guru jimmy57 has a post he about what they use in Volvos at the dealership in forum

I *think* he endorsed Maxlife for P2s but dont recall with certainty

Exec summary

Valvoline maxlife self recommends for jws3309, not approved.

This is this nasty grey area where a manufacturer refuses to allow oil makers to approve their product. It’s common and Weasley

Choices

Volvo spec fluid…non synthetic 3309. Very expensive like $20 a liter
Toyota 3309 fluid $5 …Aisin makes the transmission , and Toyota uses the same one in their cars
Maxlife..recommended but unapproved

I’ve always used Toyota Type 4 because it was cheapest among the “approved” alternatives.
EDIT: for the 4 speed variant i think i just added some Generic ATF fluid.

Likewise, I normally use the Toyota Type 4 trans oil for the 5 speed auto.

Last time though I have Volvo do the trans as I had not got time to do it while doing house renos. Naturally they used Volvo fluid.

Thanks for the input. I wanted to be certain before I flushed two 2000 transmissions each with 12+ Liters of Aisin brand T-IV fluid, part # ATF-0T4. At $7 per Liter, it's a good price but still expensive at that quantity.
