Oetiker Oetiker Oetiker

Post by BlackBart »

Paging Professor Abscate. Professor Abscate, please come to a white paging telephone......

You often read to us from the Book of Oetiker (does that sound like a Norse god?), but I have questions -

I went to do a bit of reading, and LO, I find that there are many types and variations. What's a schmuck to do?

https://www.oetiker.com/en-us/Products/Clamps-and-rings

Which is the basic clamp for what we do here? And you've also mentioned a pliers that go in straight or at 90º. Can you recommend a good one? My immediate task/need is the oiler cooler lines on the 850, per this member's fine write-up.

As an aside, look at this -
"Knipex quality, Made in Germany."

Then go to the Specs at the bottom -

"Made in China."

I have managed to collect few tools over the years for oetiker clamps. I have a pair of Knipex with the front and side crimp. That has come in handy over the years in tight spaces!!

I have to laugh at the description though!

I prefer to use what the manufacturer uses but have had to succumb to using a good quality pipe clamp on occasion as Volvo have had the wrong part listed for the job being done!

Best part of that description

“‎1 Unknown batteries required.”

I have that front side Knipex tool and it is really a good one for my favourite clamps.

Standard oetikers from Belmetrics should be fine for those oil lines. 250 psi is nothing.

Hmm my pliers have a sort of “stop” to so that when clamps are tightened the ear stops rising up. Those pliers just look like a pair of hoof pliers? I'm not sure that’s the correct english word for it. It’s probably enough to just use a pair of wirecutters though.

OK, I’m seeing Knipex and Belmetrics in older posts on this. Belmetrics is a clamp source as well? It seems you can buy directly from Oetiker?

I've got some large nipper style cutters, from Harbor Freight, that I used when doing nylon fuel lines. They worked well, but I did have to be careful not to cut through the small clamps.

I think this is what I have: https://www.harborfreight.com/10-inch-h ... 38496.html

They're cheap, but quite handy. I've used them to cut wire fencing when building compost "bins" for yard waste, and for trimming up nylon zip ties.

If I start buying Oetiker clamps, I think I'll buy something specifically for them. That probably won't be until I have to do a PCV system, Though.

The correct tool also flattens the top of the crimp to make it sit flatter. I believe this also makes the grip stronger.
