Trying to fix hesitation issue 1998 V70 GLT FWD

Post by surfbug1 »

Ok so I'm having a hesitation issue, have posted before, but have done more to fix it.

Now have new questions.

What sensors may be involved here? How many are on the GLT low pressure turbo engine?

Issue:

when cold, car runs fine.

When warmed up, will have skips in rpm, and if the throttle is smashed...the engine bogs. If I smoothly roll on the throttle, engine will be fine all the way up to redline....MOST of the time.

Replaced:

Plugs
Fuel filter
Radiator fan

Checked connections, and cleaned and reconnected

Next steps....

Replacing spark plug wires , bougicord, OEM, on order

Replacing cap and rotor ( rotor has a stripped screw. Working thru this)

Question:

What sensor may be involved here? How many are on the GLT low pressure turbo engine?

Engine temp sensor

Do you have power to the OBD port ? If not, it's probably the fuse (it's called something along the lines of "A/C and diagnostic" )

I dont really see how the MAF, crank sensor or cam sensor could have issues only when the engine is warm.

If you can get the obd working first thing I would check is the reported engine coolant temp.

Not heat related, but I've had an issue where the car would bog down under hard acceleration: it was down to a bad clamp on the fuel pump hose inside the tank. Maybe you have a fueling issue ?

How do I check power to the odb port? There are a bunch of wires.....which on is power?

I will research it, I like that idea. Thanks

Some code reader have a LED that indicates if they're powered, but otherwise you can use a multimeter (might have to use some wire as the testing prongs might not fit)

You should have ~12V between pin 4 and 16

In 99 we had an 88 Camry wagon. Similar problem turned out to be the Cap missing a screw. Forgot how I traced it  . Last cap and rotor was a 98 S70 in 2012 when I joined MVS and used the PCV tutorials. First forum ever joined also .

.

Ok,

So I replaced the cap and rotor.

Also the TCV aka turbo control valve.

Seems to run better , no hesitation.

Will test fully over the next few days

Yeah so after 600-1000 miles or so, the new cap rotor and turbo control valve TCV have fixed the issue.

I do have to reset the computer my touching the POS and NEG battery terminals....after disconnecting of course!

And I have a new set of plug wire to install, and I'd like to put a variable turbo boost controller on as well.

But this is after hooking up my turbo boost guage and also taking a compression check on the engine. ...to make sure everything is tight.

Just wanted to update this 'gremlin' and yes the cap and rotor are what cleared things up.

Comes back to maintenance which we often forget to get to other than oil changes. Also buying cars where the maintenance is unknown ti makes sense to 'Stage 0' the car so you have a known base line to start from. Finding and using quality parts is a challenge these days though! Good to hear there is positive progress.
