P80 m56 mating with engine , one procedure

Post by abscate »

Provocative title, no videos

Quick note on those doing a clutch job. I managed to solo, in about 5 minutes, install the transmission by...

Holding the. Engine flat on a crane on a cheap folding table surface. Not too much weight on table, got crankcase sump flat

Visually aligned clutch splines on pressure plate install

I slid the m56 into position on the table, then lifted the back of it to make it square to the engine. I braced it with 2x4 so it held square as I slid it

Visually saw the transmission shaft lineup with the clutch disc

Eased the transmission on until I could start two of the m10 holding bolts up top.

Applied pressure to m56 while turning the crank pulley 5-10 degrees to help splines mesh

Once the gap is down to 1 cm you know the splines are right and you can carefully draw it in with the bolts and light hand pressure on the ratchet. Stop and fix if it gets tight, don’t crack your transmission

The M56 weighs about 35kg/ 70 pounds dry. Easily handled.
