Volvo 850 T5 '95 Manual Gearbox blew, which ones would work as replacement?

Post by fantajuice »

I've been going through at least 30 pages of Google and I keep getting conflicting and non-complete information.
My 850 T5-s syncros started going out a couple years back and now after losing second gear a few months back, during a pull I lost drive and the gear knob just dangles about.

Anyway, I was planning on buying a new gearbox, but 850 manual gearboxes are quite hard to come by.
Other issue is that my gearbox is missing the sticker to say whether it's an M56L of M56H.
And I don't know from which other Volvos the gearbox would fit in (S80 2.4? for example).

If anyone could give me pointers, that would be great.

Engine's been swapped already to a V70 T5 one (not by me), not sure if the gearbox is original.

Robert Spinner might be able to help, https://robertdiy.com/
His email and cell number are on the website. He answers text messages pretty promptly.

Afaik there isn't much that can stop you from using another M56.
Differences I can think of:
- Somewhere in 2001/2002 they changed to a different spline number, so that wont work (unless you do some mix and matching with clutches)
- Internat or external slave cylinder, but there's nothing stopping you from changing to one or another
