1991 740 Turbo grey foam in airbox under filter?
Under the air filter is a fitted grey foam made to fit the lower box. Has anyone deleted the foam? I pulled it out and cleaned everything as best I could. Then put the foam back. It appears to prevent the air filter from getting dirty except in one area. Does anyone know why it's there? I know Volvo has a reason for everything they do. It seems to me it blocks most of the paper filter? I just had to replace the MAF. It was completely fouled with black dust somehow? If anyone knows what the foam is for or why the MAF would be black inside please let me know! Thanks, June

This YouTube video ran through my head twice today while taking the airbox top off!!! Here is the video and some pictures of the foam. Replacing the air filter is ridiculous!!! The part where he says This is just GM junk ran through my head....... BTW the voice is Bill of Curious Cars. Also taking the plastic arch and foam out woke the engine up and now it idles 750 rpm vs 600 rpm before. Enjoy Bill! Abscate the Beetle convertible is waiting for you to rescue it from Oskar The Grouch!!!

IIRC the foam insert was there to further quiet the air intake. It serves no real purpose and I ditched mine years ago. It is a good idea to clean out the bottom of the airbox every once in awhile.
