adhesives

Post by 5rivers »

I am having trouble finding the right adhesive that will keep a rubber moulding in place!
The rubber moulding in question is attached to the body of the car at the top of the tailgate glass. This keeps the rain and snow out of the channel running underneath the top of the tailgate glass between the tailgate hinges.
I have tried all sorts of double-sided tapes with no avail. When the tailgate is closed, the top portion of the tailgate pushes down on this moulding preventing it from doing its job (and keeping the moulding in place!). I have removed all the residue from the original double sided tape from the body and from the moulding, washed with soap and water, even used alcohol on q-tips to really make the area clean!
Appreciate any suggestions from anyone with experience on this!

I suggest contact cement. This is the type of adhesive used to attach weather stripping. Follow instructions carefully and use outdoors. if the adhesive is used on a large area and sets before you get in place, acetone can be used to reactivate the glue.
3M also makes a special weather strip adhesive in a tube.

Use the 3M emblem tape. My S80 has weatherstripping between the hood and bumper. I brought a new rubber weatherstripping from Volvo to find it used the 3M emblem tape from Volvo. I'll bet it's the same for the tailgate weatherstripping. I bought a big roll to attach the mirror glass back to the rubber backing on the passenger side mirror for my 1991 740. Thus far it has stayed in place. June
