I was running some errands and went back out to the car, no crank and no start. Tried jumping the car but no crank, no start. Can't hear any clicking of starter. Switched out battery, no crank no start. Tried opening and closing a number of times with key fob. Tried putting key in holder and starting in neutral in a variety of modes (per P Gill instructions in a similar condition situation). No crank, no start. Tried disconnecting battery for 30+ minutes. Didn't help.
One unusual symptom is that when i reinstall the battery the running lights (front and rear tail lights) stay on. Even after i lock car and wait 5 + minutes.
Any ideas on next steps would be helpful. Car has about 125k on it. Thanks.

Madbadger,
The Volvo S80 and the Land Rover LR2 share a lot in common and I own one of each.
From the Land Rover enthusiast if the steering column lock doesn't release when you dock the key then you can't move to the next step. This is a common fault on the LR2 but I believe that you are getting past this step.
I think that Docking my key will release the lock and it will turn on the power windows.
If you are getting to power mode where you can move the gear selector to neutral then the steering lock should have released.
For my LR2 when the Starter died pushing the button resulted in nothing happening.
Take a look at this link
Note: for an XC70 T6 the wiring will likely be slightly different but similar enough that you can do the same troubleshooting

The important points are
1. Inline fuse between Battery + and the starter (this is part of the wiring harness)
2. 40 Amp fuse between Battery + and the starter relay
3. As just mentioned there is a relay that sends power to the starter solenoid
4. The Starter can fail and when mine did on the LR2 (no clicks, no slow starting, no warning, it just hard failed)
With a Volt meter and someone pressing the start button you should be able to confirm item 1 to 4.
Let us know if this is confusing and if you need more help.
Good luck
Paul
