To Flush or not To Flush 4T65E 92k miles

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

To Flush or not To Flush 4T65E 92k miles

Post by Kabootles »

Howdy all,
First time Poster, long time Volvo enthusiast. I recently purchased a 2000 S80 T6 in very good shape with only 92,xxx on the odo. To the best of my knowledge this transmission has never been serviced. The fluid is on the darker side, more of a brownish red but it does not smell burnt and the transmission shifts flawlessly. My question to you all, should I let it ride or should I go ahead and service it. Normally I would go ahead and flush but with these tranny's being made of glass I would like to know your experience and opinion

Thanks!

If you do only use genuine Volvo Dextron 3. Once the factory fluid came out of my 2004 S80 4T65EV-GT back in 2016 or 2017 it really had soft shifts. I tried several brands, then I had my dealer flush it to no avail. I thought I might have ruined the transmission performance, it operated too smooth. Uploading copies of the dealer bill on my MVS maintenance log, I realized my dealer used BG fluid. Took it back and had a fluid exchange with genuine Volvo fluid and back came the nice tight shifts. Over a short period of time I installed Super tech, Mobil, and mayby Castrol brand Dextron dropping the pan and refill three times back to back for each fluid. I am not 100% sure on the third fluid brand. The parts store only had two labeled Dextron 3 and the first was Wal-Mart Dextron 3. Wal-Mart dex 3 was the best of the three I installed at home. The BG was the worst as far as transmission shift performance and caused a clunk on downshift. June

Oh my factory fluid was almost clear, not dark, or burnt. Like the red had faded.

Here's what I did for our 03 S80 T6. It's really an excellent transmission when the weak link / springs are swapped out.
