Thought I needed a transmission on a 2006 V70 but...

Post by SVO LOU »

Got a call from daughter who was on the way home from college, the car (192k) stopped on the side of the interstate about 15 minutes away, she said it made a rattling noise and started slowing down. I go out there and it started easily but when I put it into drive it wouldn't move and made that rattling sound underneath so I hooked up the tow strap and pulled her home. I was really bummed on the way home because I was thinking $$$ all the way.
When I got home, away from the noise of the highway, I heard the noise was a spinning type of noise and noticed it still wanted to roll although it was in park.
Jacked up the front pass. wheel and was able to spin it. Weird. Looked underneath at the halfshaft where it goes in the transaxle and it wasn't spinning as I spun the wheel. Bingo.
Emergency averted, and better yet, I already had one in the garage from IPD ready to go in for when I change struts.
Felt so lucky I bought a lottery ticket afterwards. :D

Is this the original axle?
After some 120K miles, the factory grease becomes liquidy and slowly leaks out.
The photos above show lack of lubrication.

PS: If people religiously rebuild the axles every 100K-120K with new GKN boots for cheap, you virtually
never buy a new axles bc with proper grease, the axles last some 400K miles.

They all eat up satellite splines. Eventually even a well-cared axle will die because there's no more splines.

Why are the splines stripped?

Just curious...

Don't know if it was an original axle but I know it didn't have any Volvo markings on it.

Don't know but I'm sure the lack of lubrication was a major factor. :D
