bulkhead / firwall insulation

Post by azureblue »

My firewall insulation is mostly gone - besides the Volvo original, is there something better that would work?

Try furnace insulation, some are sticky backed. They use it to line the walls of oil furnaces in home heating systems.

Home depot might also have a type that has foil faced on one side to stop it from soaking up oil.
You don't need the special glue, regular contact cement will work,
buy a quart can and slop it on with a cheap brush. (not the 3M spray type).

Heres a ceramic sheet type.

thanks - never thought of that ----

I was looking at heat shield sound mat, but realized I would have to custom cut it. And that means finding a pattern to cut it to.

Whatever you use, cut a small piece and bring it outside and test with fire, it should not be flammable.

Don't use glue or self-adhesive pads. Firewall is directly above the downpipe, it gets tremendously hot, most glues will turn into goo. Fix it on firewall mechanically, like the original insulation does.

Also firewall has some nice sound dampening and thermal insulation at the other side. If you add more sound dampening, you won't hear your five cylinders, which makes no point ;)

it's on the other side of the firewall behind the motor - almost all of the insulation is torn out

Yes, I understand. I just said there's no need in making it even more soundproof (than it was from the factory). And don't use glue.

I would just like the make it factor spec at least. And to reduce heat. It mostly bare metal now. Previous owner let it sit, and critters tore out the insulation

Find a good original insulation mat at a salvage yard? Or at least one to use as a pattern.

I was hoping to find a pattern pdf or something - Volvo has it in 3 pieces but I can't find picture I can get a pattern from.. The mats at the yard seem to all be glued on pretty good.
