2007 XC90 - Vida no communication with Fuel Pump Relay

Two Saturdays ago my 2007 Volvo XC90 started running rough. By the time I could pull off, it cut off and shut down. Found that one of the ignition coils had completely blown open at the top and was smoking. I had it replaced but vehicle did not start. It turn over but not start.

Hook up Vida and there are no codes. It also was not able to communicate with the "Fuel Pump Relay".

I do not see a physical relay in the fuse box. I replaced the pump and still nothing.

I could use any suggestions or help from the community. Thanks a million.

PEM (Pump Electronic Module) shot? Pretty sure you won't code, it's the unit controls the fuel pump output (demand controlled fuel supply or DECOS) and the scenario is loss of fuel (dead or fixed output). Is this the 3.2 I6 or the 4.4l V8 motor? Can see some visuals here- https://photos.app.goo.gl/XUaLKPjdZuNfXq4w9 , example is from a 2005 vehicle. Probable that your PEM is not externalized but it's a good link to see what the module looks like and is applicable for Model years <2007. Electrical schematic is also in the link.

I cannot recall at what point the PEM moves inside the vehicle, it's sometime in 2006 I thought but wouldn't hurt to check. PEM is a small finned square module that's usually right next to the fuel filter for most externalized mounting locations (was behind right rear wheel liner in early model year vehicles IIRC). Volvo recognized the issue of corrosion with having the unit outside the vehicle and moved it inside (right side second row seat (??). Even the internally mounted PEMs can fail so it may be worth a shot to check.

The CEM noted above is from a pre-05 (straight versus L-shaped) vehicle I believe. Post 05 CEMs have no relays, they use field effect transistors (FET).
