Rear crankshaft seal installation method 2000 S70

What method do you guys use to install the RMS on P80's? I see a couple expensive tools available to do this but is one needed? Anyway to test success or failure without reassembling and driving?

I am not aware of any way to test this before re-assembly as you need the engine to run to build oil pressure and see if the RMS is leaking again. I have used Blue Devil and ATP-205 re-seal products successfully to stop RMS leaks over the years. Adding it to the engine oil and then a good long steady run to allow them to work their magic. The issue is why is your RMS leaking in the first place? Normal cause is the PCV system is clogged and it then pushes the RMS and cam shaft seals out.

Engine and transmission are out of the car. Old RMS removed. PCV tested fine but I'm cleaning it out anyway. I just got this car basically for free so don't know the history on it but it's obvious it wasn't well maintained.

In that case, what I would look for is any wear marks on the crank where the seal sits. I have the dealer reseal all my main engine seals and also had them do my angle gear and transmission seals. The front trans seal leaked straight away when first used, and the angle gear (you don't have this) rear seal leaked twice. In both cases it was down to seal positioning and wear marks.

I have a new front trans seal but debating whether I should replace the old one - it's not leaking. Talked to a couple mechanics near me and they both said just slowly tap around the outside of the RMS with a socket extension to install. So I see you have a 2000 V70 that you call a PITA and you sold your '93 850. In addition to this 2000 S70 I just got I still have a '93 850 that I've had for about 25 years. Do you wish you had kept the 850 and not gotten the V70?

Nearly ever day! When I sold the 93 it was my daughters first car and one car too many for the household. I had finally got it to the point it was running perfectly. Young guy bought it and stuck it through a fence and ditch about 6 months later!

The V70 base I also regret selling. A buddy wanted it and just loves it. He has done about 40,000km in 5 years and has had a few minor niggles but nothing major. Now had over 200,000 miles on it.
