P80 Audio speaker availability

Post by scot850 »

I was trying to find out what the impedance values were of the speakers in a 04 C70. I was shocked to find that NONE of the speakers are available any longer from Volvo except the small dash speaker. For the Wagons and sedans you have the front door and dash speaker still showing as available but none of the rears. The center dash speaker is also NLA. :o

Wow! That really surprised me! I suggest if you are out harvesting you may want to look at grabbing these if they look good!!

   !!!

Funny you should say the Maxell tape guy! I found around a dozen old cassette tapes I had recorded albums onto I'm guessing maybe 30+ years ago. They were in a plastic cassette case in the garage. I had little hope of any working so dug out my 1985/6 Sony Walkman with AM/FM radio and graphic equalizer. Also it was in a small zipped case with gauze on the front which held 2 powered Binetone speakers. Glad to say they all powered up with new batteries and work remarkably well. Easier to remove a chewed up tape from a Walkman than an SC-816!!

Surprisingly, all the tapes worked really well!

So most of those self recorded tapes were Maxell! I was amazed any of them worked but all worked well.

In fact all the 5 SC-815/6 units worked perfectly and 4 were bagged up and put in a storage box. The 5th was kept out as I wanted to check my repair work on 2 amplifier wiring harnesses I had repaired. 1 was not really an issue as it had only had the radio wake up signal line broken off. The other one someone had cut all the wires on the larger connector to the original harness connection. I should add that those head units are maybe less than half I seem to have accumulated!

Naturally both worked well. :D Hardest part is getting all that sticky padded foam off the connectors Volvo used. Takes about 45 minuted per connector! Tomorrow I will tidy up some of the wrapping tape Volvo used and then vacuum bag them for storage.

6 CD unit seems like it is bad. Can't get it to work. Question: The only 'correct' connector I had for powering it up has really small wires, the size used to power the small dash speakers. If this wire is too small a cross section, could that prevent enough power getting to the CD changer for it to work? I was thinking about trying to find a connector with larger wires and trying that?

I am still amazed just how good the Volvo car audio system is for the time. With the amp added it is just excellent especially with the High end SC-816 believed to be from a 960 sedan.
