When in park, the RPM swings from 800 to 1200 and the car feels like it's about to die out.
When I shift into Drive, the car idles normally.
Any ideas?

It is a turbo, so chances at this age it has some air or vacuum leaks that are more noticeable at idle.

I was thinking along the lines of vacuum leak too, as mentioned above, and also it could be a dirty or binding AIC (automatic idle control) valve. The AIC can be removed, inspected and cleaned if needed.
