Crank pulley - remove seal?

Crank pulley - remove seal?

I am in the midst of a timing belt, tensioner, idler pulley, water pump change and replacing the gasket on the oil pump. The crank shaft seal seems ok but the gasket was in need of replacement. I have questions - given how difficult the seal is to remove and replace should I leave it in place; the bolts appear to have either thread lock or some sort of sealant - should I clean these up and apply thread lock?
When I get to putting the crank shaft pulley back on, what are your recommendations?

Are you sure the bolts have sealant on them? A lot of what I can see is just plain oily dirt. If there is some king of sealant, it may not be thread locker but a silicon type product to stop oil passing up the threads. I have to say it has been a long time since I did this last so my memory is vague now. New seals are always good.

Don't recall the crank pulley being a particular issue. What I would recommend is making sure where the seal fits onto the shaft it seals onto, is clean and has no sharp edged from wear or it will leak.

Hopefully one of the guys who has done this more recently can jump in here.

The stuff on the top few threads looks like RTV (Room Temperature Vulcanizing) sealant to me. I would clean it off before reusing the bolts.
Others can advise if new thread sealant is needed.

Thank you for your replies!
I cleaned up the bolts and pulled out the old seal and installed the new seal.
I have installed the cover for the oil pump with a new gasket, and am in need of torque measurements for the bolts. They did not require much force to take them off, but want to make sure I am not over tightening them. Appreciate your help on this!!

In a different post, I found the torque specs for the oil pump bolts = 10Nm or 7.4 ft lbs.
Hope someone can confirm this!

4 bolts to balancer torque specs that I found is 25Nm plus 90 degrees
Nut on the crank pulley shaft requires a torque of 110 Nm plus 90 degrees

25Nm = 18.4 ft lbs
110 Nm = 81.13 ft lbs

Does this mesh with your sources?

I did clean the bolts and put some of the anaerobic gasket maker on the bottom of the head of each bolt. Oiled the new o-ring installed the part, tightened the bolts down. I could only reach two of the bolts with my torque wrench, and tightened the other bolts with similar force using a ratchet with the torx30 bit.

The rest of my repair work is noted in the post titled “timing belt..”
Where I really need help!

Haynes manual for 1998 to 2007 gas engine Volvos lists 4 Ft- Lb for the oil pump bolts.

The bolts are slightly tighter than they should be. Will that be a problem?
