2009 S40 radiator fan won't run

2009 S40-1. I am told there is no fan relay on this vehicle, and wiring diagram does not show one. Is this correct?
2. The dash temperature indicator is reading properly. I have also been told there is only the one temperature sensor that feeds the dash indicator and the input to the fan controller. So, if this is true, I assume this means the temperature sensor that feeds the signal to the fan control is working properly. Am I correct in making that assumption?
3. I have power after the fuse, but i can't get the connector apart that is in the line going to the fan controller. I was told it just pulls apart, with difficulty, but is there a trick to getting it apart? Is there another way to test the fan itself, as it does not look like any of the connections on either side of the fan controller are meant to come apart?
