2006 S60 2.5T starting issues...

Post by cn90 »

Trying to help friend with 2006 S60 2.5T 100K miles, well-maintained car.
The day before ran fine but the day after...

1. Starter motor runs but crank pulley does not spin.
Battery 12.4V, fully charged.
Basically, after the TB cover was removed, the factory TB looks good at 100K miles.
WP: no leak and tensioner looks fine.
When cranking, the starter motor runs like crazy but the crank pulley does not spin (TB does not move).
I attached a photo of generic Bosch starter motor for reference.

* Can I assume the Starter Solenoid is bad?
* How many people here have had a bad Starter Solenoid?
* I suspect this is a rare problem around here (bad solenoid).

2. Now, when the engine is shut off, the Aux Fan (in front of Radiator) ran for another
4-5 minutes or so then shut off, does anyone know why the Aux Fan runs for 4-5 min
after engine is shut down?

3. Scanned for codes and found P0336 (crank sensor error).
Can a bad solenoid cause P0336 code?

Thanks everyone!

I recently changed my starter on my 08 S60 2.5T, was starting strange here and there, slow turning over, etc. Swapped out original with a Carquest unit. 153k miles.

Also did my 08 C70 T5 (2.5), it would sometimes not start at first turn of ignition, always would on second. Changed starting relay first but persisted. Went with a Napa unit on that one while I was already changing all of the cooling hoses. 120k miles.

Both units were $150-160USD with some online discounts.

DB Electrical SBO0047 is $85 on amazon, replaced back in 2019, zero problems. This is actually the second one. The first one I put long ago into V70 I sold, it was working fine as well.

+1 on Brody's suggestion. Don't think it is the solenoid or it would not spin. The fact it is spinning is good sign the bendix spring has failed.

Is the Bendix sold separately?
Or I am better off with a "new" starter motor from junk yard?

Pull it off and take a look, it might be gummed up.

Thank you all for replies.

Most ppl simply buy a "new" starter bc it is easier that way...but I looked further:

- Bendix is replaceable.
- The problem is finding the correct PN, may have to look into
Bosch catalog for PN.
- Ebay has some sellers selling Bendix, some are aftermarket, some are Bosch OEM. Looks like it has 9 teeth.
- Again, the problem is finding correct PN and brand (Bosch only imho).

In the Bosch video below, you can see at 2:17, where the retaining collar/C-clip removed (socket + hammer), the Bendix slides right out.

If you can find the parts and rebuild it then why not. The main parts to fail are the bendix, the bearings and the carbon brushes wear. Those being worn would also cause issues with reliable starting. The Solenoid and the connecting wire corroding and breaking also cause issues.

Interested to see where this goes!
