Hello All, hopefully simple/stupid question.
Just purchased a 2014 XC90 Platinum edition with the HID headlamp. Everything electrical with the car works just fine, outside of a few simple failures like the right BLIS camera, and screwy Hall effect sensors in the passengers door as well. Common from what I understand after owning my P2 S60 for 7 years.
However, I cannot figure out how to activate the daytime running lights. Seems no matter what combination of light options I select, the halogen bulbs next to the Xenon’s will not come on. LEDs on the bottom work, the small marker lights next to the turn signals work, and the single fog in the rear all work as expected.
I did pull the bulbs and visually inspect them, and they seem to be brand new bulbs. Silvania brand, extremely clean, and the filament is in perfect condition. I checked the fuses both visually and OHMed them, both DRL fuses are fine.
I also tried putting a flash light on the light sensor in the dash (in a dark garage) while trying different lighting combinations, and it works fine, but I still cannot give the DRL to come on at all. Or are these considered a secondary headlamp that come on when a HID fails?
Thanks!

If you have active bending lights (ABL) on a post MY13, might have a look at this- https://www.swedespeed.com/threads/2013 ... ed.641257/

It does have the active bending lights as well. Car is fully loaded.ggleavitt wrote: ↑05 Jun 2023, 08:33 If you have active bending lights (ABL) on a post MY13, might have a look at this- https://www.swedespeed.com/threads/2013 ... ed.641257/
I tried turning the lighting knob to off and put my flashlight on the light sensor (albeit, in our garage), and the DLRs still did not turn on. Engine was not running either, unsure if that matters.
This is a US car, originally registered in PA, ended up in NJ which is where I bought it from, but am a PA resident.
My assumption is that they’re just disabled in the software. Not a big deal, just wanted to understand how the car is supposed to work, and that it’s expected behavior. Too many different posts with conflicting info, but the above was helpful to confirm my suspicions with this cars configuration.

LED Daytime Running Lights (DRL)
To help conserve fuel by reducing the use of electrical current in the vehicle, DRL can be used in daylight conditions instead of the low beam headlights, which consume more electrical current. The daytime running lights are mounted in the front spoiler and use bright, electricity-saving LEDs (light emitting diodes).
With the headlight switch in the position as shown in the illustration, press the button with the A symbol to activate the automatic LED daytime running lights in daylight driving conditions (the indicator light in the button will illuminate). A light sensor then monitors the ambient lighting conditions and automatically switches from LED DRL to the low beam headlights in weaker ambient light (and will switch back to DRL when the ambient light becomes brighter). Press the button again (the indicator light in the switch will turn off) to switch on the headlights.
The LED DRLs will also switch off automatically (and the low beams will switch on) if:
• The rear fog light is switched on
• The windshield wipers are switched on for more than 10 seconds
If the LED DRL function was activated when the ignition was switched off, it will be active when
the ignition is switched on again.

Specifically, look at your fogs for DRLs in the 2014. They could be disabled. You can also see after the 9 min mark here the DRLs are in the fogs:

I was never able to find a way to get the halogen lights to come on, lol. Not a huge deal, just wanted to make sure there was nothing of concern.chitownV wrote: ↑05 Jun 2023, 21:45 Specifically, look at your fogs for DRLs in the 2014. They could be disabled. Those center halogens don’t go on for DRL in your 2014 XC90 with the ABL HIDs and factory LEDs in the fogs. Since they are still wired in, the halogen “high beam” could potentially be used for a fail safe option and turned on by the module if one of your HIDs decides to go out….that’s a guess because that’s a common safety standard on other manufacturers.
You can see the part for your 2014 says DRL for the factory LED fog light:
https://www.tascaparts.com/oem-parts/vo ... h-31383157
In my 2011 BMW, those center halogen “high beams” will turn on when making a turn at slower speeds usually higher angle turns, left side light turns on momentarily for left turns and vice versa, to help illuminate the turn. That’s in addition to the active bending HIDs. Otherwise, the center lights never get used in normal driving.
