I wish Volvo had made discrete DRLs on the P80

Post by matthew1 »

It's a shame they made the headlights the DRLs. So many suffer premature headlight end-of-life caused by ruined reflectors (constant heat). And there's no one good fix.

Yeah, kind of a bummer. At least it's fixable in 30 seconds for free, unlike the P2 and later cars (the little screw on the bottom right of the switch - read the manual). If the original owner had the forethought to do it, it's not a problem, but basically nobody did.

Not sure about others but my '99 XC had inline resistors with connectors put on the headlight harnesses - I believe this was an attempt to make them last longer. I've removed them because I actually like being able to see the road at night.

In order to learn how to fix something, you must first learn how to break it.

Those resistors were a TSB mid 2000s I thinki removed mine , too, on all cars.

The TYC headlights are under $100 and last at least 5 years. Down here on Island lights aren’t as important as I only drive about 1 mile in country darkness at 30 mph

How long are these TSB's in effect? Can I take a 2000 S70 to a dealer and have a TSB done?

Usually 10 years from date of TSB, which was 2001, I think?

I might have the resistor packs lying around

Thanks. Don't want resistors on my headlights - they're dim enough (but better than they were after I lined the reflector surface with foil tape). If it's only 10 years then probably none of them apply to my 2000.

You can turn the DRLs off on the P80. The switch is in the corner of the Headlight switch panel. Just use a small screwdriver to turn the switch.

Did you see my White appliance enamel solution?

Yes. I don't remember the specifics. How do you rate it?

I just got the feeling there was no Eureka! discoveries. But I'd be happy to change my feeling if you rate the enamel fix highly.

I knew about the switch. At this point in P80 lifetimes, it's like closing the barn doors after the horses have left.
