2008 XC90 Intermittent Starting Issue

Post by 01_Nautic_V70 »

I have a 2008 XC90 with the V8 at 188,000 miles and I'm recently having starting issues with it.

Maybe 1 out of 10 start attempts (higher when temperatures are high), the engine will crank fine but not start. It seems like there's a timer on crank because it will crank for a few seconds then cut off. If I step on the gas far enough it will crank again and sometimes start. The other 9 times out of 10, it starts fine, no need for gas pedal and it purrs along.

After a "problematic start" there is a chance that it will go into random misfire like it has a bad coil pack or more. Shutting the engine off and starting again (it starts right up in this scenario) kind of resets things and it purrs along just fine, no misfire at all.

It does not set a check engine light or code. It also does not say anything in the message center like "Immobilizer" or similar.

I'm trying to think through what this could be. Starting needs fuel, air, and spark. The fact that it goes into misfires sometimes makes me think something is up on the spark side of things. But the fact that it will help start if I give it gas pedal makes me think fuel or air as that butterfly valve must be opening with the pedal.

Any thoughts on this? Anyone seen anything like this on the B8444S engine?

EDIT: I'd also add that VIDA does not show any faults (other than a rear XM antenna fault). It's like there's no memory of not wanting to start.
