The trunk latch has never worked with the switch on the door or the key fob. When I hit the switch on the door I can hear the relay click but it doesn't pop the trunk.
3 questions:
1. Will replacing the trunk latch motor likely fix this?
2. Do these parts commonly fail?
3. Are the 98-00 s70 trunk latch assembly the same or interchangeable?
Thanks
(Car is a 98 hardtop c70)

1) Don't know as there are several possibilities
2) Yes with age and slamming
3) Don't know. Normally on Volvo web-sites they list under the correct part if the part is interchangeable. Recently this feature has not been working on my PC for some reason. Here is the parts diagram. You will need to compare with the chassis number on your car.
https://www.volvooftorontoparts.ca/a/Vo ... 73910.html
What I would check first is the wiring harness for the trunk lid. I am not sure on the convertible, but on the sedan (S70) the wiring harness is attached to the LH trunk arm. The wiring harness wires can break in the section to the left of this. You may have to remove the side trunk liner to see.
Neil.

Thanks Neil, FYI my car is a hart top, not sure if that changes anything.
Looks like 400+ dollars means I will just continue to use the key.
I have never seen a c70 at my junk yards which is why I was hoping the s70 would be compatible. Can't for the life of me find if they are compatible or not.
Edit: switched to coupe on that link and parts/price is the same.

Looks like the same parts is listed for coupe/convertible. I used Firefox instead of Chrome and it shows the part only fits these 2 models unfortunately. Depending where you are maybe try one of the specialist junkyards like Erie Vo-Vo on the east coast and vandsautodismantlers on the west near Sacramento may have something. I believe there is also someone in the south that parts out Volvos as well but not familiar with the name.
The same stands for the trunk lid wiring check. First place to check on a P80 car.

Thanks Neil, the wires that are visible look good and I'm not gonna tear apart the insulation. Might run a continuity and or voltage verification to the pigtail and go from there.
The key method has worked but I just had to offset the latch to the passenger side as the lock cylinder apparently has developed a small amount of play not allowing the trunk latch to pop. The offsetting the latch a few mm worked like a charm.
Been key popping since 2008 so I will just wait till a barging pops up. Now that I can actually get into the trunk again, the priority has diminished a bit. Definitely gonna keep my eyes peeled though.
Appreciate your help.
