850 wagon, how to remove inner trunk panels

Post by Clemens »

I have to remove the left interior panel in my 94 855's trunk so I can access the rear quarter panel from the inside. How is that done?

The answer is not easy, and expect broken clips, especially around the tailgate area trim.

Assuming the 850 is identical in early form as a V70 P80 then this is what I recall.

Open the tailgate and remove the LH floor panel. It should have a small pull tab at the rear. If not a screw driver with a flat blade to pop the clips to lift it and remove.

For some strange reason Volvo overlapped the upper and lower trim around the tailgate at the sides. You have to remove the lower section and to do that requires the upper section to be pulled out enough to remove the plastic 'peg' into the lower part. I use a plastic trim tool for that.

The bottom trim around the tailgate area has to be removed. I am a little hazy on this if it is held along the bottom by screws or small bolts. Removing this from the side has about 3 plastic clips that typically break. They are a U shape. They are silly from Volvo prices but I found a company in Ireland that you could buy them from for a fraction of the cost.

This is not the place I got them from but at least you can see what they look like and a part number. The place I bought them from was on Ebay, but they are currently sold out. This place has them at a better price than Volvo:

or

https://www.ebay.ie/sch/i.html?_nkw=volvo+9132876

Ebay has a bunch of alternate suppliers including Germany and UK.

Next you have to drop the rear seat and lower the back.

Do you need to remove the inner panel completely?

Now I have run out of time, and want to go and check on my car for the rest!

Thank you for the detailed writeup, Neil. This helps alot.
I've hat the plastic bezels around the tailgate off a few times for replacing the tailgate shocks, but never far enough. I need to be able to push the rear quarter panel out from the inside since I want to get a historic vehicle registration and that requires straught body panels. I bought it with a dent yesrs ago, but now I need to straighten it out.

Had a lot on today. I will be out in the garage helping a buddy find a rattle on his classic Mini tomorrow so will take pictures as it sounds like you will have to take the panel completely off.

I have not forgotten! I was at the junkyard and there was a partially dismantled V70 there so I have taken a few pictures that may help!

I finished earlier on having to undo the lower tailgate surround as the 3 sections of the trim at designed to overlap each other. Good idea but equally stupid as it is flimsy, and by now old plastic.

You can see the 3 layers that have to be undone to remove the lower side panel. the lowest section has to undone partially by using a trim tool to force the panel outwards, and also the upper section enough to allow you to pull the middle piece out.

Note: The upper section is fragile so be careful or you can crack the rear edge particularly at the upper radius. I find it is more flexible if you remove the rear speaker cover. Again carefully prize it out from the side closest to the tailgate. There is a slight indent. Be careful it is fragile and has 2 blade type tabs on the far side. Only move it out far enough to allow yo to pull the stub for the middle piece out from the frame.

This was already cracked by a clumsy idiot trashing the rear of the car:

Remove the lower cover for the rear lights. It has a plastic turn knob you turn 90 degrees and then it comes out.

Last job is to disconnect the panel at the front. You have to remove a T25 screw under the plastic panel that looks like a grille. This prizes up and out revealing a metal plate holding the 2 panels together.

It is easier to remove the side panel by removing the whole center floor panel but it can be done without that.

You can now lift the rear of the lower panel up and over the tiedown hoop and this allows you to raise and remove the side panel to remove it.

I think this covers most of the challenge, but the 850 might be slightly different but not much.

Reinstalling is much easier if you have the center floor section removed. This is held in with only about 6-8 10mm headed bolts.

Thank you, Neil, that is awesome. This helps alot. Now having confirmed by that writeup of yours how much brittle plastic has to come off I might give a PDR glue and pull a try. If that doesn't work, I will remove everything from the inside.

Take your time and maybe try some silicon spay if any part is sticky. Broken clips on the lower surround as mentioned are the most likely issue. Top section has metal clips, just don't let it hang too long as it may break. I was thinking, you may be able to limit that happening by taping the outer edge with a thick sticky tape which may help reduce the part cracking up at the top bend.

Otherwise just watch out for the aerial connection for the rear side windows and it should be good.
