- The 2006 S60 with 102K miles has the following symptoms:
1. License plate lighting is not working (of course check the bulbs first).
BTW, you can get pulled over by police for this alone.
So yes, fix it ASAP.
2. Trunk can only be opened by the key slot in the trunk lid itself.
- The rubber pad on the trunk lid does not work.
- Remote on key fob does not work.
Luckily, the solution is very simple with simple tool.
* The trunk wiring loom: old PN 8697923; it is now 30773915.
- About $55 at Volvo dealer.
- I'd not use a part from junk yard bc at this age/mileage, it is gone anyway.
- Note that previous years such as 2004 and prior, the PN is different.
CIRCUIT INFO:
- The actuator itself is fuse #6 at REM.
- When you press the "Trunk" button on the key fob:
Remote signal ---> REM ---> wiring loom to the actuator to pop open the trunk.
- When you press the rubber pad on the trunk lid itself:
Electrical signal ---> REM ---> wiring loom to the actuator to pop open the trunk.
So yes, the electrical signal goes from the trunk lid's rubber pad, back to inside the trunk
(via the wiring loom) ---> REM ---> then back outside of the trunk ---> trunk lid actuator.
- And of course, the lighting for the license plate goes through this wiring loom.
PROCEDURE:
1. D/c the battery ground cable.
2. Remove the carpet lining the trunk lid and the carpet on the left side to expose the REM.
- Use trim tool to pry the rectagular clips out.
- You may break 1 or 2 clips. No problems, you can find them at junk yard
or at Volvo dealer.
3. Now, start with diagnosis: unplug the cable at REM and at the 2 connections on the trunk
lid. To undo the REM connection, use a very small screwdriver and press as shown in the photo.
- Use an Ohmmeter to check for continuity at corresponding wire (check the wire colors):
if you find an open circuit (infinity Ohm), then raise/lower the trunk lid, it may reconnect
(in that case, resistance = 0 Ohm), very common symptom of frayed wires.
4. Once the diagnosis is confirmed, just replace the cable as shown in photo.
The wiring loom comes complete with grommet/clips etc.
No need for anything else.
Easy, easy fix...
