2003 V70se High Beam Permanently ON! CURE

Post by ChrisVince »

The fault, ‘main beam (M/B) permanently on’:

Been chasing this fault quite a while now, cleaned the indicator switch and it seemed to be fine after, but the fault returned about 3 weeks later.
This time I knew it was the indicator switch, so this narrowed the search right down.
The M/B’s went out if very slight pressure downwards, was applied to the indicator arm, so I suspected wear.
After removing the switch, I removed the pcb, then I could see two sets of triple switches, the main beam flasher/switcher is the top long one, that works on a lever action.
Operating the flasher switch, I could see that when I applied the pressure downwards the lever moved the last 1/2mm, using a probe I could feel this freeplay.
It was this miniscule amount of play that was the cause!
To fix this:
Pull the white lever upwards and off, underneath you will see two white prongs, it is on the inside on these prongs (that fit over the lever arm), this is where this minimal wear takes place.
I used two lengths (the same length as the prongs) of electrical 2.4mm heat shrink tubing, after heat fixing one, play was still evident, so I applied a second piece over it.
It is the LOWER prongs where you should fix the tubing, this ensures the lever is travelling all the way DOWN.
On refitting all play was gone, and the M/B switch works perfectly.
