07' XC90 front strut bolts...

Im trying to replace the TTY bolts on my XC90s front struts. I ordered new nuts and bolts via FCP Euro (via their part finder) but they lack a non-threaded protrusion which makes their overall length a bit shorter than OEM (see pic).

Looks like the threaded portion is the same/close and I could potentially loose the washers to gain a few more threads. I talked to FCP on the horn and they said the two are compatible but that I ordered the wrong nuts (I have nut 985932 and should have gotten 987938...and they dont have those)

The FCP part is "Volvo Strut Mount Flange Screw - Genuine Volvo 982869" which supersedes 966363 (Im assuming this is the longer bolt?)

Chassis number (last 6 of VIN) is 364938

I found this related MVS post that is focused on the nuts...implying I can use the 985932s I got?

...Lastly can anyone confirm the correct spec for these is 77ft lb + 75 degrees?

I think that the longer non threaded part is just to make putting the nut on easier. Torque specs as attached.

I've use both type nuts and bolts interchangeably, whatever I had at the time. I added to that thread some years ago noting that I didn't think there was a difference, here are my current vehicles-

06, I'll guess I re-used the bolt when I swapped the struts in 2021:

I went ahead and used the FCP parts I had. Everything fits together nicely with a healthy amount of thread protruding. Heres a pic for future people.

TTY assemblies are stretched to the edge of failure and should never be reused, especially somewhere as important as a strut...and especially on a Volvo!

Specialty Products Company lists the 81260 to replace the upper bolt if camber adjustment is needed.

I am not convinced this bolt is TTY.

I (and shops, dealer mechanics) re-use this bolt many times, zero issues.
The fact that a bolt is turned to a certain angle does not mean it's TTY bolt.

Yeah, the protrusion is a locating part of the bolt, but is not needed. The bolt looks good, but I don't like the nut. It doesn't have the built-in washer that helps get proper torque values. I am still on my original bolts/nuts and would have continued to use the same Volvo nut.

Volvo sez replace em, strut-to-knuckle connections are commonly TTY, and the 77ft lb + 75 degree spec is gettin' into the yield ballpark.

Is there any evidence or documentation that these are TTA and not TTY assemblies or are we going on feelings and anecdote?

Anecdotally, I reused my original strut bolts for 1000mi without incident. Perhaps they would have been fine for the rest of my vehicles life....or perhaps in a year or two I would become one those sorry souls hopelessly stuck with a horizontal wheel 2/3 of the way up dingo piss creek because I hit a big bump and didnt want to spend $50 on overpriced OEM hardware.

In my case, knowing without a doubt that my shiz is within spec and never needing to think about it again is easily worth the extra expense!

To be honest, in most cases regardless of parts being replaced the OE nuts and bolts seem to be of higher quality. Have always reused those bolt. Mechanics I've seen and worked with just impact those on and no torque wrench ever. Seen some FCP videos where I thought they should use a torque wrench but didn't. My Service Manager at Acura would say of many things "have you ever seen those fail"

They're commonly reused for sure and even if they are TTY its possible the remaining baked-in safety margins of the system is sufficient to prevent failure and last forever anyway. Maybe not. We dont know. I typically reuse fasteners but this is too critical of an assembly to roll the dice on over saving $50.

This year I have personally witnessed three instances of passenger vehicles with horizontal front wheels, hopelessly stuck in intersections and parking lots presumably from acute strut knuckle connection failure. It aint pretty, even at low speeds.

Do it right and it wont happen to you. Simple as that.
