S70 Starts but won't accelerate and dies

Post by Dristig »

S70, 230k miles. Original owner. A month ago the car went into limp home mode. I pulled the ETS and found the throttle plate barely moveable. This ETS was purchased Xemodex in 2013. As this unit had a Guarantee I returned and they rebuilt including paperwork showing the performance. Reinstalled, started car, idled perfectly but would die every time I tried to accelerate. If I coaxed it to higher RPM it would die returning to idle. It is currently showing codes 1119 and 1670. I have replaced the fuel pump relay and replaced the Air mass with another one I had. Suggestions on where to look next? Frustrating. Thanks in advace

Is your car a turbo or non-turbo?

This link may help with the P1670 code:

If your car is a turbo, then code P1119 is the MAP/intake temp sensor, however, I have read this code can be caused by the coolant (ETC) sensor being out of calibration, and then there is this link to someone who has the same codes you have. This is a weird issue in this one:

Check your fuel pressure at the rail, needs to be rock solid at 43 psi for 2000 Denso or ME7

Turbo or NA? I’ll guess NA because you didn’t vamp on the nasty turbo throttle body removal

I thought fuel pressure should be more like 50 for that model?

50 at pump, regulated to 43 at fuel rail, fuel rail is where most of us measure

The test and spec in Vida are for the Schroeder valve right after the pump.

Starting in 1998 in North America , Motronic 44 and DENSO (NA) and ME7 (99- Turbo) use different pressure regulation than previous.

I learned this all in 2023

On edit - paragraph break for clarity, added more info

Sorry for delay in my update but life got in the way. Anyway, I replaced the fuel filter, relay and measured fuel pressure at the rail. Stayed at 50lbs the entire time I ran the car. However, still hesitates and dies when returning to idle. Funny no codes were returned and check engine light did not come on. Between the Electronic Throttle and the Air mass on the intake pipe, is an electronic device hosed to the intake. Does this have anything to do with the idle? Could this be my problem? Any way to check it's functioning? Thanks again.

Can you post a picture of the device so we can identify it?

Thanks,

Neil.

Yes. DENSO systems use a separate idle air bypass off the air cleaner snorkel, unlike turbo ETM cars. Try unplugging it to see if your idle changes. Clean out the hose and check electrical connectors, too.
