rear muffler hanger rusted

Post by AlanS »

2006 xc70 Rear muffler hanger, the 'branch' that holds the rubber coupling broke/ rusted from the muffler. That is, the metal rod that is welded to the rear muffler has rusted away. What can I bolt on to the tailpipe to then reconnect to the body hanger?

A photo will be needed so something could be created to improvise.

The link below might be what you're talking about. If so, then all you need to do is to lift the rear, get an adjustable channel lock pliers and silicone lubricant spray and you should be good to go in under 10 minutes.

- The FCPEuro link posted above is for the pipe in the middle.

- For the muffler itself, use a rebar (muffler shop has it)
and weld it to the body of the muffler. The other end goes
to the rubber hanger. I will take a photo and post it later...

My 2007 S60..The tailpiece fix (on page 3 of the thread in the link below) just failed in one year.
viewtopic.php?p=636464

My 2006 S60...the previous owner had the local muffler shop did this repair using a rebar
as shown. In a way, this is a clever fix, I like it...

If you have a shop do it this way, make sure they support the weight of the muffler using a jack
or something before welding the rod in...

Much of my time during the job is spent hauling things up and down the stairs to the basement or in and out of the storage shed, or running back downstairs when I realize I need something else,or taking a break from standing out in the sun,or using flashlights or work lamps when it gets dark.

The bracket only works if the tail piece is still attached.
Even so, it is a bad place as it puts a strain on the welding spot. Bad factory design.

The photo I showed you above (done by the previous owner) should have been the factory design from day 1!
