volvo 245 harmonic balancer

Post by whitevolvo »

Hi Matt, 1986 Volvo 245, B230F engine. A new replacement harmonic balancer has timing marks clocked differently than the original balancer. I used a screw driver in the number 1 spark plug hole, and got mechanical TDC. The original doesn't clock exactly to the TDC mark on the cover, because in order to align the camshaft marks, I need to rotate the balancer a little. The new balancer timing marks are approx. 25 deg BTDC. No Volvo part numbers on either the original or the replacement, but sold to me as a Volvo factory part . The hold down tool does fit into the holes...could this be a Volvo marine dampener ? , or is there a difference from different fuel injection systems ? Side by side, they look identical. There is a number cast into the rubber ring on the original 3509299 ...Why are the timing marks different on the 2 balancers ?
