‘02 S60(non-R) Vehicle Speed Sensor in a ‘05 S60R
2005 S60R 5-speed auto. Hey everyone. Hope all is well. So, other day while driving my trans started acting up (mis-shifting, not knowing what gear to be in, etc) and then the CEL popped on. Code was p0503 (Vehicle Speed Sensor “A” Intermittent/Erratic/High). So I assumed faulty VSS. Took it out, examined it, reinstalled but no change. Tried again later on, and the p0503 code is gone and now there’s a p0500 (Vehicle speed sensor A). I’m running on thin ice with my job so I couldn’t call out because of my car so being out of options, I took another Vehicle Speed Sensor that I obtained along time ago from the junkyard from a 2002? (I believe) S60 (non-R) which both are visually very different sensors (02 non-R sensor has wires coming from it and s60R vss sensor has a female connector instead) and I spliced in the wiring and installed it and went for a drive and surprisingly everything worked fine. I only tried that because after doing a little research I’m under the impression that for the most part, all vss sensors provide the same functionality which is providing a speed signal to ecm. The first couple shifts felt a tad hard so I drove it in manual mode just so I could get to work and back and so far so good. But, using my brain once I got the work problem out of the way, I realized that doing what I did can’t be good, right? Or do you think i might end up damaging something? I also might add that my battery is shot and have been having to jump it before being able to drive. I read a lot about how the batteries on these cars are vital in their optimum operation.
