850 Oil Capacity Change
Does anyone know the reasoning for some of the 850s having different oil capacity? And which years have which setups?

The answer seems to be yes there is a variation. 2nd new info to me today! The variance seems to be that some engines (turbos) have oil coolers so the capacity if that drains down is then higher. There is also for some reason 2 different dipsticks fitted. I was caught out by that when I found I seemed to have to add too much oil for my 98 Volvo. Someone had swapped in the wrong dipstick and tube.
I continue to do what I was taught all those decades ago when learning to wrench on cars, most of which I didn't know of in the general repair shop I helped out in, in the village I grew up in.
1) Drain oil
2) Remove oil filter/housing.
3) Where possible, fill new filter with oil, smear oil on seal, and re-install. This is not always possible on all vehicles. Just reduces the chance of the engine to run oil-less for a fraction of a 2nd.
4) Fit a new crush washer to the oil drain bolt and torque to the correct torque. Don't re-use crush washers!
5) Top up oil to recommended level if known, and if not, add a pint/liter at a time and give a minute for oil to settle between each fill then dipstick level. Repeat until you hit the dipstick, then add about 1/2 liter and see where it ends up in terms of level change on the dipstick.
6) Once you get to or near the max line (keeping note of how much you have added so far and how much 1/2 liter changes level on dipstick), start the car and let it run for a minute then switch off and let it sit for a couple of minutes and check the level. Add as necessary and keep notes of all the amounts you have added. Obviously if you have not pre-filled the oil filter you may have to add a filters worth of oil.
This is not rocket science, but once you have done this once you know how much to add in future changes.
Always do oil changes on level ground!!
Information can sometimes be wrong, or in some cases don't include the oil filter quantity for some reason??
Neil.

Hey that is way too fancy...........!
Reminds me of the story my Dad told me. During WW2, the US and UK governments tried to encourage interaction between the 2 countries regular folks. At school kid level it was by setting up penpals.
My Dad was paired with a girl from somewhere in the US. The first letter he received started innocently enough. Then there were a few general questions about like in the UK like:
1) "Do you still live in caves?........"
2) "Do you have running water, both hot and cold?
3) "Do you have electricity?"
Let's just say, the communication process did not continue..!
