I found a real nice wood wheel from an '05 XC70 at the auto wreckers last week and grabbed the clock spring with it and would like to put it on my '03. I wasn't able to get the airbag as it was gone already so I need to get one at some point.
My '03 has 3 separate wire connectors coming from the clock-spring into the wheel, the '05 has only 2 wire connectors from the clock spring.
Does anyone know how these parts relate? Does a 3 wire airbag exist for the wood wheel, or do I need to use a different clock spring? Or what does the 3rd wire do on an '03?
I haven't had time to do a deep dive on this yet but have determined that the steering wheel part number for the wood wheel is the same for about '02 to '07 XC70, S60, and XC90's. The clock springs seem to differentiate between DSTC or not.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.

Since I have a 2002 V70 XC I was curious. Per FCP regardless of DSTC it's 2 wire 05 vs 3 wire 03.
2005 is first year with 2 wire as 04 still has 3 wire from FCP photos, part numbers & Fitment Guide.

Looking at the pictures, the main difference I can see is that the later 2 plug version actually has a third plug connector on the clockspring. So I guess that the 'third' connection is a plug in and not a lead with a connector on the end. Both also have the 2 plug ins on the rear.
I'm thinking that the 2 larger wires are to do with the airbag, so if you can figure out if the same wires are used for the 3rd connector/cable then if they are the non-critical variety they support, it would be a case of cutting off the connector from the later car and splicing onto the older version?
I guess the other thing to take into account is the dynamic stability control or not is your car has it or not. Too many options...!!

Thank you, mine doesn't have DSTC, at least theres no button on the dash for it. Now I need to get into the wiring diagrams and see where the wires go to on my "3 wire" clock spring.

Good observation. Blacklab can check both the 03 & 05 part numbers with FCP's to determine DSTC. Not sure if splicing and leaving off one connector would be a good idea however, just in case the circuitry has changed.

Love those who can read wiring diagrams. After spending almost 2 years for an AA in Electronics at the local JC I loath all things AC, DC, high, low voltage and micro electronics. Got A's but the foundation never sunk in

Thanks Neil and MoVolvos. I suspect you are right about the 3rd plug connection on the 2 wire clock spring. The 2 wires are definitely for the airbag with the yellow insulation, seems to be and industry commonality. When I get time this week I’m going to study the wiring diagrams for the 3 wire clock spring and pop my ‘03 airbag off and see if I can figure out what the 3rd connector is for.scot850 wrote: ↑25 Mar 2024, 15:36 Looking at the pictures, the main difference I can see is that the later 2 plug version actually has a third plug connector on the clockspring. Good luck! I tried looking at the posted link for the 03 XC70/V70/XC90 wiring diagram. As any regular here knows wiring is the thing I hate most. But these wiring diagrams are impossible I found to follow, so I hope you have more luck. I had great difficulty finding parts of the equation, especially the airbag. The wiring from the SWM (steering wheel module) is non existent. All it gave were pin numbers on a connector, but not where the wires went or their color. Got to be the worst style of diagram ever.
The last few pages gives the ID codes for the steering wheel area, the problem was most started with an 8/XXX. The only 8/XX numbers I could find were 8/1-8/10? if I recall. All the ones I wanted to find were 8/30 - Even the 3/XX ones I could not find. There were several but all around the numbers I looked for but none of the one I needed except 3/130 for the SWM.
Definitely goo luck!
Neil.

Got it figured out and installed today, I had to get an airbag and wiring bracket which is the wiring harness inside the steering wheel out of an '02 S 60 to accommodate my 3 wire clock spring. So in the end I have a 2005 steering wheel, 2005 airbag, 2003 clock spring, 2002 bracket all on my 2003 XC 70......and it works! If anyone else is interested in this I can provide some guidance and part numbers.

Nice work tracking that down and adds elegance to the beige interior. If the 02 S60 bracket is on FCP or a Volvo parts site, if you mind providing a link for a pic.
