I'm a car guy not a computer guy, so forgive me, but this is where I am at:

1) I am running a very modern Asus laptop - Windows 11 Home - 16GB RAM - 64 bit - v3.10 usb ports

2) I downloaded and installed the vbox version of the windows 7 build from volvodiag. Long story short - VIDA seems to run fine.

3) I bought a Chinese DiCE from Walmart partner - after all is said and done it identifies as SCANMATIC SM-2
a) It has Volvo stickers and looks the same as every device I've seen on the internet.
b) I bought an external DVD reader and downloaded the drivers off of the DVD that shipped with the DiCE .

4) My computer sees the DiCE in the Device Manager and it says all is well.

5) The DiCE does not show up when I try to set it up in vbox. All I see when I try to select it in the USB settings is "unknown device".

6) I only get one solid green light on the DiCE itself - Firmware Status. I haven never seen any of the other lights even blink once.

7) Needless to say - when I try to select the DiCE as my communication tool when setting up my vehicle profile in VIDA - which seems to run fine - I don't see my DiCE reader I only see "not selected".

Weirdly - the device was showing up as "Unknown Device" in both my device manager and in vbox - until I bought that external dvd reader and installed the drivers at which point the DiCE showed up as SCANMATIC in my device reader.

I thought I had it beat but I can still only see unknown device when I try to configure vbox.

I feel like I'm close - any tips ????

Thanks

Enable USB 2.0 in the VM. The DiCE units are 2.0 .

I got it sorted folks.

The first DiCE was a counterfeit. I then ordered a Mongoose JLR2534 cable and - after much fiddling and loading drivers onto the virtual machine - success !

This video was so very helpful...
