oil thermostat o ring and RTV

oil thermostat o ring and RTV

I'm replacing the oil cooler lines right now. I have everything out and the only part missing for putting it back together is the recangular thermostat o ring. The old one isn't torn, but it is hardening up a bit.

Since the way to put everything back together favors using some RTV to "glue" the o-Ring into its place during assembly I was wondering if I could use a bit more RTV as a second seal layer for the hardenibg O-Ring. Or should I wait till Monday till the ORing arrives at my dealer?

I don't need to drive the car rightaway, but I want to finish the job and have one Volvo off the jackstand.

Opinions, please!

I am not a fan of RTV. It can cause corrosion from the acetic acid and the crumbly bits that get loose work their way to other areas and cause problems in valves.

I'd wait for the new O-ring. And a little grease on it will keep it in place during installation.

I know just how you feel. But for that amount of time and work, I'd wait for the new one.

This makes +4, wait for the Volvo part. There isn't a lot of pressure on the system at that point, but even a little seepage there can make a real mess.

4 vs. 1. That's not fair.
So I will be forced to another long haul in my Transit camper van on the weekend.
You are right, it's not worth the risk.
