I just recently got a new 740 wagon that needs some work done to it. When I picked it up, the guy who was selling it for his neighbor said that he found out that same day that the speedometer and odometer doesn't work. We've concluded that the abs speed sensor on the drive shaft needs to be rewired. I later found out that the instrument panel doesn't light up. It has all the warning lights at the bottom like engine, service, high beam, etc. the light for the speedometer and gas gauges and all of those do not work. I replaced the fuses and the bulbs but it still didn't work. I read that the DRL fuse could also affect the panel lights so I went to check that only to find out there were no wires going to #23 on the fuse box. There was a fuse in it but it wasn't connected to it. I took apart the console so I could better access the fuse box only to be met with a nightmare of wires.
Where do I even begin trying to rewire the DRL, or should I even bother? Could it be that the speedometer and odometer not working is affecting those lights not turning on?
Instrument panel lights not working in my 1989 740 GL Wagon

Do any lights in dash come on when you turn on key without starting?
Speedometer and odometer will not work if the driveshaft speed sensor is not sending a signal. I think the drive shaft speed sensor will be in the differential. It may have junk on the magnet and just need to be cleaned.
Odometer may also have failed internal gears. These are available for maybe $25.

Yes it is the sensor on the drive shaft. I took it off and cleaned it but the wires need to be replaced, not the connector. All the sensor lights turn on when I turn the car on before I start the engine. It's just the lights for the gauges

You may be able to find a schematic online for the 740.
