98 850 T-5 no crank with key (Thread now has additional immobolizer info)

Post by RedBrickCollector »

Had engine and trans mounts done and now the car does not crank. No voltage at the green solenoid signal wire.

Work was done at a Volvo specialist and the usual suspects have been ruled out in one way or another. Car starts if key is in "on" and he solenoid signal terminal is connected to positive, and runs well in all gears.

Ignition switch was ruled out by voltage test at the pins. All other functions work normally.
Alarm/immobilizer not likely as the the alarm light works and does not light up when trying to start with the key.
Relays and fuses checked.
ECU and TCM boards visually inspected and reseated, plus no issues driving the car
PNP ruled out by trying to start in both N and D, plus no issues driving the car. Reverse lights work.

At this point I'm wondering where the other end of the green solenoid signal wire terminates so I can look for a break.

Also wondering if there's a better way to check/service the ignition switch along with the other items listed.

If this is the remote starter terminal (by the left strut mount, red and green wire and a spade terminal coming out of the bundle) then the car does NOT start when this is connected to positive

As information. On 850 models that led on dashboard is Alarm not Immobilizer btw. They work independently from each other on 850 models.

If Engine mountings were touched and thats all which made this happen then i would check grounding to be there as first thing as it was touched then.

Edit: If this has some sort third party remote starter... i would throw it away as first thing as it one step more complex issues when going broke.

I would assume my spec is closer to EU than US as I have the glass headlights. Best guess is it is a 1997 production euro spec. Is there a good way to tell?

Issue resolved by cleaning the PNP switch harness. Slowed down to take things one step at a time and re-check everything after my initial frustration, used good contact cleaner and it worked afterwards.

There is no '98 850.
Last year for 850 is '97.
'97 is also transitional year when s,v70 is introduced for EU market.
U.S market got them in '98.
If you have a chipped key...then it is EU spec..if not...it's U.S spec since U.S market didn't had chipped keys untill '99.

Alarm on my 97 model. There is no wire going there from IMMO on mine to there.

Immobiliser on my '97.
'96 from my neighborhood where i get parts from...also.
When i disconnect immo2 box led doesn't flash.

I recently replaced my immo2 box along with it's chipped key and ignition lock since mine had a fault where it didn't allowed me to read & clear ecu codes or access to immo2.

Okay you got me interested to check mine function or where this comes from tomorrows. I am more than open in any corrections and love learn  :)

Just where might sight comes from: 96 Volvo schematic diagram IMMO has no connection but Alarm aka Guard II ( the 210-211 relay ) has connection to that LED and mine only reacts when if i open door with mechanical key instead using remote when it shuts the led.

Mine works like this...
Led starts flashing immediately as you turn engine off.
Led turns off as soon as you turn the key to pos.II.
When i disconnect immo2 box connector...led lamp by the windshield is not working...when i plug it back...it starts to flash.
Car have aftermarket alarm system installed back in 2000 when i bought the car and have a separate led installed in the line where Tracs,Info...etc switches are and that led flashes only when alarm is armed via remote.

Car was equipped with Guard Alarm II from the factory since there were factory stickers on both front doors windows.
210-211 alarm relay is in it's place.

Parts car from which i removed immo2 box, chipped key and ignition lock acts the same like mine.
