87 volvo 245 strut replacement

I have a 87 volvo 245 wagon that I am going to install new struts. For those that have performed this repair, did you compress the spring on the car or remove the unit from the car then compress the spring and change the strut. I know both ways will get the job done but is one way easier than the other?
