Driver side axle replacement 96 850t.

Post by rguzz »

Possibly the easiest way is to remove axle nut, undo the control arm at the ball joint end, swing caliper/hub out of the way and remove axle. It may be that's all I need to do? Why undo the control arm from it's inner bolt if it will drop down out of the way enough to pull the axle out leaving it in place. What am I missing, thanks.

You may need to disconnect the outer track rod end to allow the strut to move enough to get the axle out and back in. I always found it hard to get the lower ball joint out and back in as it seems to jam at the lowest point when trying to remove it. I prefer to undo the 2 inner pivot bolts at the sub-frame.

If you undo it at the ball-joint, I recommend replacing the nut and bolt for safety. The inner ones don't need replaced. Just note the direction of the bolt head when removing.

Undoing the axle nut is the hardest part. A good high output impact gun or 3/4" drive breaker bar and 36mm socket is recommended. Not using the impact, keep the wheel on the ground and chock the wheel to loosen the nut. I have broken 2 x 1/2" breaker bars trying to undo the nuts. Re-torquing is also 'fun'. Tighten the nut as far as you can and torque on the ground.

Good luck!

Neil.

Exactly what I did two weeks ago, the only struggle was getting the axle to pop out of the gearbox (it's either 30 seconds or 20mins, never inbetween)
Granted my V70 is on coilovers that are shorter than stock shocks, that might help a bit with getting the lower ball joint back in

I seem to recall someone suggesting that when you try to reinstall the axle that you have the circlip with the opening either up or down, can't remember which.
