Alternator failed 2003 XC 70, replaced with non freewheeling pulley

Post by Blacklab467 »

So my alternator failed yesterday on the way home from work and I got the "low battery" DTC and amber triangle, strange that I didn't get the red caption on the panel like last time it died? I checked the voltage at the battery and it was 11.6, then I checked it at the B+ terminal on the alternator and it was 11.6 as well.
I went to the auto wreckers this morning and pulled a good original that hadn't been remanufactured or anything. The only problem is that my alternator had a freewheeling pulley and the replacement either doesn't, or it does and its seized and no longer freewheels. I'm wondering if this will be a problem that I no longer have a freewheeling alternator? It's on now and appears to be working fine and pumping out 13.6 volts.
My plan is to get a new Bosch regulator and bearings and rebuild my old one and put it back on, Im wondering if the one I have on now will cause a problem?
Any ideas or advice?
Thanks.

i think its the signal wire terminal, not the alternator itself, otherwise the red battery warning would be lit.
the windings are getting energized.

My alternator clutch assy grenaded years back and was towed to my local Volvo guys. They installed a rebuilt alternator with a solid pully and said that I wouldn't have any problems. That 2001 V70 T5 got totaled by someone running a red light.

Perhaps, I did take it apart a bit to inspect the brushes and slip rings and they are mint, I'm going to take it to an alternator shop this week and have it tested before I order parts for it and rebuild it. The field wire and terminal looked ok but I suppose it may not have been.
