How best to drain the fuel tank on my 99 S70?

Post by ThaddeusTheBold »

Hi,

I have (by the gauge) about 1/4 tank in my S70. I'm about to remove everything from the car to make way for my electric conversion, including the gas tank.

I dropped a siphon line in there with one of the rubber squeeze balls, as far as it would go down before hitting some obstruction; pumped and pumped, but only got air. When I pulled the hose ouot, the outside wasn't damp with gas.

So what's the deal? Is there an obstruction at the end of the fill tube that Volvo put there to prevent fuel theft or something, or is the level just lower than I am thinking? What is the best way to drain this thing before I remove it? I really don't want gasoline going everywhere.

Thank you.

How about pull a fuel line and jumper the fuel pump relay?

It’s about 15 minutes to pump about a couple gallons from the front fuel line

Unless someone else can think of a reason, I don't see how gas would go everywhere if dropping the tank, as is. Connections are usually all at the top of the tank.

That is true. I'd say it's a matter of weight to lower it. Is a quarter tank that heavy?

Or stick a match in there - it'll be gone in no time.

Full tank about 100 lbs/ 50 kg. Just enough to be annoying. 1/4 tank easy

Any more than a couple gallons will slosh around and make you curse.
