850 Sedan trunk seal NLA, other options?

Post by 850 LPT »

Hello everyone,

Harold the 850 is taking in water, and we found quite a bit of it recently in the spare tire well after rainy days. Unfortunately I was not able to fix this before my daughter took the car to drive more than half way across the country.
She's been in Denver for a week now and it hasn't rained, so it hasn't been an issue, but eventually this needs to be addressed.

I was doing some digging and found the Volvo part number: 9152039. It has been discontinued and is nowhere to be found.

So my question is if someone has found an alternative solution. There are generic gaskets available, but I don't know the size to look for.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks, Dirk

Hey Dirk, are these glued on? Is your current one damaged or just flattened with age? Unfortunately none in the junkyards here at present although I just met a guy yesterday who has 7 850's and I think he said 3 were parts cars!

You could try to use a generic self adhesive seal (used for insulating crappy windows) as a second seal. Try sticking it onto the lid right where the original seal would meet the lid. Not sure if it works, but it could work. Theoretically...

Hello Neil,
These are not glued on and super easy to replace. I had the same problem on my first 850, I think they just flatten out with age. After I replaced it, the trunk was dry again.
To find a used one that is still supple and has retained it's shape is probably difficult at this point. But it never hurts to try. If you come across something, please let me know.

Thanks, Dirk

Will do. As it does not get as hot up here typically, and it is dry, seals don't get too bad. I'll keep an eye out.

If you get a chance to take a photo of the offending flattened item at any point, post it so I can try to see if anything I find is not as bad.

I used an old link for Skanix, looks like they show it NLA now.
Might be worth a phonecall to vp, they're pretty easy to work with.

Thanks Foggy,

It looks like the one at VP is for a wagon. That one is still available elsewhere too. I checked Skandix before and they didn't have it.

I just ordered a generic one from Amazon, which I hope it will tie us over. Dimensionally it's pretty close I think, but of course who knows what the quality is like.
My daughter is going to install it and then test it in a car wash. I am going to tell her to put the joint up in the center by the rear window, but I am uncertain about how to seal the joint. A round piece of something that would fit inside the bulb as a connector would be ideal.

Thanks Neil,

Good idea, I will have my daughter take a photo. I think it looks the worst down in the bumper area and around the taillights. That's where it's really flattened out.
I ordered a generic one from Amazon, but I see that as more of a temporary solution. We shall see.
