I just bought a used 2016 XC60 and am wondering if it's worth trying to update the maps and voice (both have updates you can do via USB according to volvo's website). I tried doing both via USB sticks and it didn't work. My questions are what might I be doing wrong (is there a dealer update I need to do first?) and are these even worth it if I mainly use my phone for everything in the car? I wouldn't mind getting the voice updates if it adds more functionality/speed.

I have not needed to do any of these as thankfully my cars are way to old to have these. I would speak to your local dealer and ask for guidance. It could be simple. You could do what I would do in this circumstances and actually go to the dealer with the car and act dumb (I'm a natural!!) and explain the service folks what you are trying to do. If the dealership folk are any good they will give you help free of charge.
