P80 1999 s70 NA Evita slight steering shimmy on bump

Post by abscate »

I have a slight shimmy in Evita when I hit a decent bump in the road. No damper like a VW.

I’ll inspect front end components for looseness. Maybe time for control arms or tie rod ends ?

Car has a relatively new steering rack , thanks to a fastidious maintainer P.O.

You know the drill:

1) Wheel bearings for looseness and wheel bolts are all tight.
2) Check the steering rack is not loose on mounts and fluid is up to level.
3) Check the inner and outer tie rods for play
4) Check the front struts for leaking
5) Check top strut mounts
6) I would say check for a broken spring, but you would know about that if you had that.
7) Check the steering shaft for play.

Then it gets into guess work after that.

if it's the rear and that feels shimmy, it could always be the delta links or the other horrible bushings whose name thou shalt not even say or write.

Hey, take a pass on this one. You now have a complete answer for possible sites to go looking for the issue!

I work on the, if it comes from the steering only it is most likely front end issues. If it steering and you feel it through the driver's seat, then it is likely from the rear.

Good hunting!

I now have a 'there is a strange noise from under the 'R' near the front seat area' to work one. Only took the R 500km of driving to develop a new issue! I had it up on the hoist and could not find anything obvious. 2 plastic heatshield nuts had worked their way through the material. Those have been reinforced by large washers but can't see how that was the issue. More investigating to do!

Check the yoke where the steering inserts into the rack in the driver's foot well. Check the inner tie rod also making sure it was turned all the way to seat / tighten against the rack. Work backwards on this one. I would check the ball joints and wheel tightness and being flushed against the brake rotor surface.
.
Blessings,

Forgot to include the yoke check and the lower bearing on the steering shaft going dry.

I’m guessing it’s lower control arm and ball joint time for Evita, but will let you guys know. She’s only driven about 6-9 miles a week now , so I’ve got some time to sort out

Price points per control arm

Febi $60
Meyle$100
Lemforder $120
Volvo $190

All new hardware should be used here, two bolts/ nuts and ball joint bolt/ nut

For me it is Lemforder, but if you plan to continue using for a long time, go OE. The 2 x bolts and nuts for the control arm I have reused unless they are corroded badly. Worst case replace the nuts. Pinch bolt 100% replace the bolt and nut everytime.

I used the TRQ parts from 1AAuto to replace control arms and ball joints. About $160 for the package. I bit the bullet and bought the ball joint tool. The handiest part of it was the slide hammer adapter to fit my Sunex axle puller. The driver is not much different than using a 2" iron pipe and some all thread to make sure the bolt holes line up.
