Interior handle needs painting!

Post by AlanS »

The grips on my 2006 XC70 are worn. Is there a paint that I can use to repair? If so, how do I color match?

I personally would not paint the interior as the off gas will remain or linger for a long long time.

When I replaced all 4 very gummy clothe door cards on the 2007 S60 2.5T with leather cards, I wrapped the door handle cap with a chrome wrap I intended to use on the mirror cap of the 2008 C30 2.5T. From the photos I believe you can also successfully wrap the handle itself with some practice after you view some Youtube video.

I can't remember if I used an all purpose cleaner (APC), 97% alcohol or something even harsher besides maybe a green pad or magic eraser to remove or smooth out the factory material used to coat the plastics. Will try and upload pictures as I'm getting automatically logged out each time I try to post.

Car interior before cleaning after purchase so is pretty dirty. Leather door card before cleaning also. I didn't attempt the handle as I ran out material from unsuccessfully wrapping the mirror cap of the 08 C30 T5.

Yes, there are interior paints for plastic or vinyl. Once you find a good company, they should have a search for make & model to match the OEM color. I know the company SEM makes quality paints, don't know if they have interior colors or just "pretty close."

I will use vinyl wrap on my interior handles once the car is road-worthy.

Explain 'vinyl wrap' when it comes to things like door handles, etc. I am familiar with the exterior of the car, whole body wrap...didn't know you could do the same on interior parts.

When I first saw vinyl wrap for the exterior I thought it was poor excuse for a good paint job and some kind of fad. The 08 C30 trims were full of scratches and dimples and I couldn't come up with a solution to refinish it.

Any exterior vinyl wrap you buy online can be used on the interior. A set of leather gloves and hair dryer or heat gun would be best to help to shape the hard corners. On the very difficult shapes may require a little hot glue on the back to hold the vinyl. This was at least 4 years ago and has held up on the 2008 C30 T5. The door handles were much harder for a first time attempt at wrapping but still working.

You do have to remove the parts in order to properly shape them around the corners and circles. I think the cost was under $15 for some inexpensive wraps from Amazon. I used a satin finish rather than trying to go with a real carbon fiber gloss look which maybe more difficult as the gloss might not hide a first time attempt imperfections.

Thanks for the confirmation, I'm glad I was still in the right direction on cleaning the gummy coating.
