Valet key door lock

Post by beewstew »

Recently bought a '04 xc70. Car only came with a single valet key - no buttons on the key head.

What should the locking behavior be on the driver's door lock?
  1. On my old 1995 940 Wagon, the driver door would lock all doors or unlock all doors when I turned the key CW vs CCW.
  2. On my old 945 if all the doors were closed, pushing the (driver) door lock button down would lock all the doors.
Is this the functionality I should expect in an 04 xc70? Right now neither of those things happen - my inclination is to try a junkyard driver door lock module - is swapping the lock cylinder over an easy job?

What is the key doing? I would expect the driver's door lock to open the driver's door only on the first turn, and all the doors and tailgate on the 2nd turn CCW. This assumes your locks are 2 stage ones like ours are. Not sure what a valet key does. It may only open the driver's door not all doors.

as well as starting the car, valet key is usable for everything but unlocking trunk and glove compartment is my understanding. turn it twice left like scot850 suggested
