140 alternator wiring question

Post by marmiteman »

Hello to you all. The alternator gave out on my 74 145 a week back and there is nobody left who will take on a rebuild so I bought a remanufactured replacement. It is made by Pure Energy and has model number 13038. Everything seems to be fitting together nicely (with a couple of adjustments but I am left wondering about this piece (a condensor I assume). Have attached a pic of the old wiring as it was in the vehicle, filthy and corroded. The green arrow points to the piece I am wondering about.

The other pic is the new one wired in, without final cable alignment and adjustment. I have highlighted the screw on the back that seems to be there for the purpose of holding the condensor. However, the screw has electrical continuity with the whole body.

My question is whether I should isolate the base of the condensor from the body of the alternator or if this is supposed to be the way. I have looked all through the green book without getting this info so if any of you out there could shine some light I would be most grateful. Warren

I'm not sure what the purpose of that may be. I can't recall seeing that before. I recall from many, many years ago the car could be prone to a whine of interference through the radio. It may have been something that was added to prevent that happening?
