Timing belt tension angle/cant

Post by jderimig »

I just finished my first timing belt install on my 2012 S60. I used the Gates timing belt kit. When finished and tension adjusted the tensioner looked odd. Pic below. The tensioner is canted towards the engine block. I removed the tensioner to check and noticed a bevel that is machined on the mounting surface so it appears intended to do this. The original tensioner I removed was flat and did not have this angle. Is the new one supposed to be this way? I am guessing this angle would try to steer the belt towards the block and against the flange on the next timing belt sprocket.

It looks like you may have gotten a part that was improperly machined.
