Right side outer CV joint issue
As I was replacing the front brake pads on Sveedy today, I noticed some heavier outer edge tire wear. Then just as I was finishing up, I noticed a tear in the outer CV boot, with evidence of grease being thrown around wheel well. So I'm guessing the outer CV is now bad.

IDK, I'd probably repack it unless I could feel appreciable slop in the outer CV. You can't go back once you move to aftermarket axles, and the downhill slope is steep.

Unless the boot has been split for a long time and all grease has gone, I would also suggest to replace the outer boot only with a GKN Lobro one. As Erik has mentioned, proviso is there is limited play in the joint.

No play that I can feel, but that might not mean much, since I can't duplicate the stress that it under goes when I whip through round-abouts at speed. But no clicking / knocking noise either.
Maybe I can get away with a boot.

You should definitely try a new boot. If you can't get to it in a timely fashion try Boot Mending. Car was home a week ago from the Jan 24 temp fix and it was completely dry on the outside so working still.

I agree about giving it a try with a new boot. The axle boots on my 1997 have split three times over the years and they're still working well... I clean them out, repack with grease and put a new GKN boot on.

If the car can’t be down could go to Amazon or eBay can source you a cheap CV shaft while you reboot and grease the OEM one. Pretty easy to swap out.

So I started on this project ( ordeal ) today.
Getting the axle out was it's own pain. I went with the removing the strut bolts and separating the tie-rod option, but the strut rotated a bit as soon as it was free from the hub. Decided to remove the caliper for more movement. Looks like it will be fun to reinstall. Argh.
Took three hands to tap the c.v. joint off of the spline shaft while holding that spring clip open. Double Arrgh.
Spent an hour trying to get the 6 ball bearings back in their cage inside the joint. Triple Arrrgh.
Then the unit wouldn't go back on the shaft. Finally got it all back together. Quadruple Arrrrgh.
First Oetiker clamp worked; second broke. None available locally. So twist wire clamp. What is 5 Arrrrrgh's ?
At that point it was getting a bit hot in the shop....Guinness said to call it a day. I listen to Guinness.
So all I have to do is reinstall the axle. Hoping that all of the bad mojo was exorcised today.

Axle went right in. Just as I noticed a little wet grease around the inner boot. Axle back out and on the bench. Found small tear in the inner boot. I can't see any way to remove the inner c.v.from the axle ( three roller type of bearing set-up ) to change the boot, so let me guess......I have to remove the outer c.v again, with all of its new grease, and all of those headaches, in order to get to the inner boot ??
I'm going to run out of Arrrrrrghs !!
