[V70, 1999, 2.5 TDI] Air Conditioning - Compressor does not run

Post by MichaelPL »

Dear All,

I kindly ask for advice on where to look for the issue.

Vehicle: V70 2.5 TDI (1999)

The air conditioning system recently underwent a major service (new compressor, dryer, radiator + flushing/new refrigerant). Everything was working fine.
The car sat idle for a while, and the battery died. I started it with a booster, and it worked.

After about 30 minutes of driving, the air conditioning stopped working. The compressor isn't engaging. The internal circulation and OFF buttons on the control panel are blinking.

The FCR shows the following errors: ECC-413, ECC-414.

I’ve checked the sensors in the system (2-pin and 3-pin), swapped them from another car – same result.
I removed and cleaned the interior temperature sensor (it spins after starting the engine and air conditioning).

Any ideas on what I could check next?

I am not clear. Did you swap the cabin temp sensor? The fan may run, but the temperature portion may be bad. I have had to replace one for this. If it is not sensing temperature the system will not run.

I removed the sensor and cleaned it, but I haven’t replaced it with a new one. I’ll try today.

I assumed (perhaps incorrectly) that since the fan is running, it’s working.

Unfortunately not a guarantee. The little red bulb at the front is the thermostat. The fan pulls the cabin air over that for it to determine the cabin temperature.

Careful when removing the unit If you have already seen it there is a rubber casket the fits into the front of the sensor. It often gets stuck behind the dash or falls down inside the center console area. It helps seal the area so the fan air draw is more effective.

Good Luck!

Hi Neil,

I’ve removed the cabin temperature sensor and replaced it with a working one (I’m certain it’s fully functional as it came from another car). I’ve also swapped out the entire air conditioning control panel with a different one. Unfortunately, the result is still the same – the AC compressor isn’t engaging.

Any other ideas on what could be the issue?

Thanks again for your help!

Michael

Probably leaked out from evaporator.

Remove a connector close to a firewall and jump the pins on the connector side while engine is running... blower and ac turned on.

Jump only for a few seconds.

If clutch engages that way...the system is empty.

You didn't mentioned that evaporator was replaced in 1st post...only compressor, dryer and radiator(condenser).

My mistake Misha. The evaporator remained the same, but it was flushed with air conditioning cleaner until clean.

Are you referring to jump in the air conditioning relay socket - black-purple ? (red circle)
